Asia Pacific social commerce sales expected to double by 2024 - Euromonitor International

KUALA LUMPUR, May 21 -- Last mile delivery and social commerce are expected to revolutionise consumer interactions with brands in Asia Pacific (APAC) this year, according to Euromonitor International.

In its new whitepaper, ‘Top 100 Retailers in Asia 2020’, Euromonitor looks at how the APAC region continues to accelerate as an innovation hub for retailing.

According to a statement, with two billion Internet users solely in APAC in 2019, social commerce sales reached US$2 trillion and are expected to double by 2024. (US$1 = RM4.345)

While Millennials and Generation Z mostly contributed to the rise of social commerce, digital marketplaces in APAC enabled companies to rapidly pivot onto omnichannel strategies.

This acceleration, amplified with the COVID-19 outbreak, allowed retailers to rapidly adapt in multiple innovative ways, such as contactless delivery.

“With the heavy shift to e-commerce in the height of COVID-19, retailers with a stronger digital presence prior to the outbreak are likely to fare better as consumers lean more into that channel,” said Euromonitor International senior research analyst, Deepika Chandrasekar.

Meanwhile, the company’s research analyst, Clare Lee said concepts like last mile delivery, omnichannel and click-and-collect were accelerated by the pandemic, and were likely to stay afterwards.

NTHU adopts big data to study potential spread of coronavirus in Taiwan

KUALA LUMPUR, May 20  -- National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) has recently begun to collaborate with Facebook and Harvard University in using big data to study the potential spread of coronavirus in Taiwan.

This international collaboration is led by Assistant Professor Hsiao-Han Chang of the Institute of Bioinformatics and Structural Biology at NTHU, according to a statement.

The preliminary results indicate that the risk of local transmission is higher than long-distance transmission between counties and cities. Chang’s advice for the upcoming holiday is to stay at home and avoid crowds.

Based on the results of another study she recently conducted using mathematical modelling to assess the impact of wearing face masks, Chang strongly supports the Central Epidemic Command Center’s (CECC) decision to set up a system for distributing masks as it prevents the hoarding of an item important for limiting the spread of the epidemic.

At January-end, Facebook began providing movement data for a joint study by NTHU and Harvard University's School of Public Health on the spread of the coronavirus. The data includes estimates of the number of people moving among cities.

Chang's research team also found that local movement plays a more important role in the potential spread of the coronavirus than long-distance movement. This runs counter to the widespread perception that distance travelled is the most important risk factor.

In addition, a study by Chang and Colin Worby, a computational biologist at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, shows that the proper use of masks by the majority of people reduces both the numbers of infections and deaths significantly.

SUCCESSFUL DIAGNOSTICS OF ANTIBODIES: OPTICS BALZERS AG HAS FURTHER DEVELOPED OPTICAL DIELECTRIC FILTERS IN THE UV SPECTRUM

UV filter for medical diagnostics and analysis

BALZERS, Liechtenstein, May 20 (Bernama-BUSINESS WIRE) -- Short-wave light, ranging from 100 to 400nm in the UV spectrum, has the ability to fight pathogens. In medical fields this property is commonly used to combat germs, bacteria and viruses. In fact, studies have shown that when irradiated with short-wave UV-C light more than 95% of viruses become ineffective.

This press release features multimedia. View the full release here: https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20200519005613/en/

Optical filters with transmission of over 95%

Short-wave light is also used in virological diagnostics. Antibodies are marked with a fluorochrome, and when stimulated by a defined UV radiation, can then be visualized. Specially matched optical filters are used to separate excitation and emission wavelengths.

The steepness of the edge found at the transition between these spectral ranges is characteristic of the high quality of our filters. On a spectrum of T < 0.01% to T > 95% an edge steepness of approximately 2 to 5nm is required. To achieve this level of precision the filters at Optics Balzers AG are manufactured using sputtering process technology to create these dielectric coatings. In addition to the spectral accuracy, the environmental stability of the filter is a decisive factor in this coating process.

Specific adaptation of filters possible

The SP270 short pass filter from Optics Balzers shows the characteristic spectral course of a corresponding filter for the excitation of fluorophoric substances. The highest possible transmission rate is guaranteed, with a pass range of around 270nm. In addition, undesired excitations of up to 480nm are suppressed in the long-wave blocking range.

The fluorophoric substances stimulated by UV radiation emit long-wave signals above 275nm. The BP310-390 long-pass filter used here enables the detection of these emitted signals. The BP310-390 filter shown in the image below has an average transmission of > 95% for signal detection, within the range of 330nm to 390nm.

Our optical filters, which enable the excitation and the detection of signals in the UV range, can be adapted to specific substances. Based on the appropriate filters, a wide range of relevant information from the UV spectrum can be obtained for further medical diagnosis.

HONG KONG IDENTIFIES BIOWASTE REUSE OPPORTUNITIES, SUPPORTS SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

The Environmental Protection Department awards Black & Veatch with a consultancy service agreement to assess environmental engineering techniques for city’s first woody waste recycling plant

HONG KONG, May 18 (Bernama-BUSINESS WIRE) -- Hong Kong is increasing the recycling rate of yard waste and wood waste to promote sustainability.

Hong Kong is embarking on a semi-research project to facilitate territory-wide recycling of woody waste material. The Environmental Protection Department (EPD) of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region has appointed Black & Veatch to be the Owner’s Engineer of Hong Kong’s first pilot plant for woody waste recycling. The pilot plant will have a capacity of 24 tonnes-per-day and will be constructed in EcoPark, Tuen Mun.

Reducing waste is one of Hong Kong’s strategies to optimize resources and reduce landfill disposal, while supporting sustainability. Woody waste recycling is a core element of the city’s biowaste management strategy to divert valuable biomass resource from the landfills.

“Black & Veatch is ready to support Hong Kong’s sustainability visions. We have worked with a large number of utilities and government agencies on waste-to-energy projects throughout the world, and many of them involve the conversion of biomass by means of pyrolysis or gasification to energy products,” says Andy Kwok, Managing Director, Black & Veatch Asia North.

“The unique aspect of this pilot project is its focus on the production of biochar-type products, which are expected to find sustainable outlets in the Hong Kong market,” says James Chan, Project Director, Black & Veatch Hong Kong.

Biochar is similar to charcoal and made by burning biomass in a process called pyrolysis. Biochar improves soil fertility and captures and stores carbon dioxide safely. In addition, the pilot plant project will explore if biochar can be produced to meet higher quality standards for other beneficial uses. For Hong Kong’s woody waste recycling plant, the potential feedstock includes used pallets, yard wastes as well as spent bamboo scaffolds.

Black & Veatch Hong Kong is tasked to review the technology, market, environmental and regulatory aspects of the project’s proposed biochar plant. It is responsible for preparing a reference design, assisting in procurement, supervising construction and commissioning, and overseeing the pilot testing.

Black & Veatch is recognised as a global leading provider of environmental engineering services. Waste management is another way Black & Veatch supports Asia’s resource resilience and sustainability strategies.

KUALA LUMPUR, May 15 -- Viet Nam has created little value added from exports (US$69 billion in 2019), that is equivalent to only one quarter of nominal value of exports of goods and services (US$260 billion), posing many strategic challenges to Viet Nam’s development. (US$1 = RM4.343)

This is according to the recently released study by the ASEAN-Japan Centre on Global Value Chains in ASEAN: Viet Nam.

Massive foreign direct investment (FDI), in particular export-processing FDI in Viet Nam means that the country has become a favoured destination for export-processing production.

Although gross exports of Viet Nam are growing, the contribution of domestic value added exports to the national economy is small, accounting for only 12 per cent of GDP, compared with the ASEAN average of 33 per cent.

The effects of FDI on the economy as well as exports depend on the value added structure of the Vietnamese economy, in which the secondary sector (manufacturing), in particular the industry of foods and beverages, exhibits a large multiplier effect.

Global value chains (GVCs) of Viet Nam indicate the extent to which the country is involved in world and regional production networks.

During the period of nearly three decades, the share of contribution of foreign countries to value added exports from Viet Nam fluctuated from 23 to 42 per cent before stabilising at 32 to 33 per cent.

There is a relationship between the increasing level of FDI and the growth of participation of Viet Nam in GVC, and both of these create benefits for the economy.

In order to capitalise on this, Viet Nam should improve its legal framework and administrative procedures to help the domestic sector tackle its current challenges, and keep track of the economic reforms under Doi Moi to attract FDI, along with promoting the development of high technology and modern infrastructure.

CSOP NASDAQ-100 Index Daily (2x) Leveraged Product (stock code: 7266.HK) listed on Hong Kong Stock Exchange

KUALA LUMPUR, May 15 -- The CSOP NASDAQ-100 Index Daily (2x) Leveraged Product (stock code: 7266.HK) will be listed today on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange to pair with CSOP NASDAQ-100 Index Daily (-2x) Inverse Product (stock code: 7568.HK).

According to a statement, this will help investors to capture the United States (US) stocks’ two-way movement and seize investment opportunities brought by intensifying market volatility.

The listing price of 7266.HK is around HKD 8 per share with a trading lot of 100, and the entry investment is approximately HKD 800. (HKD 1 = RM0.56)

7266.HK aims to provide two times return of the daily performance of the NASDAQ-100 Index (before fees and expenses) by investing in the E-Mini NASDAQ-100 Futures.

Because of the nearly 24-hour tradability of the E-mini NASDAQ-100 Index Futures, the price of 7266.HK will move dynamically during the Hong Kong trading hours despite the trading time difference between the Hong Kong and US stock markets, which may induce price insensitivity.

In the current volatile market circumstances, 7266.HK has attracted an initial investment of US$5 million before listing. (US$1 = RM4.343)

The Nasdaq-100 is known as one of the world’s pre-eminent large-cap growth index. It includes 100 of the largest US and international non-financial companies listed on the Nasdaq Stock Market based on market capitalisation.

Featuring the world's most innovative and prestigious technology companies, the Nasdaq-100 index is universally deemed to define modern day industrials.

CSOP Asset Management, Head of Sales and Product Strategy, Melody He said: “Having successfully launched 7568.HK to help investors hedge the downward risks of Nasdaq-100 index in 2019 September, CSOP brought the 7266.HK to enable investors to deploy their trading strategies in a more diverse way, especially under the current marketing situation with intensifying volatility.”

Supreme Court favours Hisky, rules Echosens (Shanghai), Fu-Rui compensate for illegal acts

KUALA LUMPUR, May 14 -- Shanghai Echosens Medical Equipment Technology Co Ltd (Echosens (Shanghai)) and Fu-Rui Corporation, parent company of Echosens SAS (Fu-Rui) were recently determined by the Supreme People’s Court of China to have fabricated information to constitute business defaming against their opponent, Wuxi HISKY Medical Technologies Co Ltd.

According to the ruling and judgment, Echosens (Shanghai) and Fu-Rui lost the case and the business defaming acts involved therein included: fabricating information; sending lawyer’s letters and letters of notice containing misleading expressions to the opponent’s target clients and dealers; false statements delivered by senior executives publicly; and, damaging the goodwill of the opponent.

According to a statement, the evidence submitted by both parties showed that Echosens (Shanghai) used to send lawyer’s letters and letters of notice with fabricated information to dealers and hospital clients of Hisky, repeatedly.

In such letters, it was claimed that Hisky’s products had infringed upon some patent rights; there were also some threatening expressions, including that the clients had committed infringement and would be subject to joint liabilities and claims, etc., to mislead the dealers and hospital clients of Hisky.

Previously, employees of Echosens (Shanghai) manipulated Hisky’s products illegally and recorded a false video to defame Hisky, according to the civil judgement.

Subsequently, the video was disseminated via the Internet, causing harmful influence to Hisky's reputation.

Furthermore, on the Internet, senior executives of Fu-Rui also disseminated false information about Hisky for the purpose of their own performance and business defaming, also according to the civil judgement.

Based on the foregoing facts, the Supreme People’s Court of China rejected the appeal for review of Echosens and Fu-Rui, and once again confirmed that Hisky owns the patent rights to the hepatic fibrosis products.

The Court also determined that the relevant acts of Echosens (Shanghai) and Fu-Rui were illegal and constituted business defaming to Hisky; Echosens (Shanghai) and Fu-Rui should stop the relevant defaming actions immediately, and should submit written materials to the over 10 hospitals to eliminate the bad influence and make compensation to Hisky for its losses.

Hytera Multi-mode Advanced Radios Deliver Intelligent Technology Solutions For PMR Industry

SHENZHEN, China, May 12 (Bernama-BUSINESS WIRE) -- The PMR industry has undergone tremendous changes in recent years. As the advent of broadband technology offers fast data services such as video calling and streaming, the expectation is that a majority of mission and business critical narrowband PMR users will migrate to broadband, yet many of them want to retain private narrowband systems for highly reliable voice services, which leads to a coexistence of the two technologies. Instead of launching 'smart' devices supporting largely separate broadband and narrowband radio modules, Hytera has introduced truly intelligent multi-mode advanced radios where the two technologies are deeply integrated at all levels to provide mission-critical voice and broadband data on the same device for the first time.

This press release features multimedia. View the full release here:
https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20200512005364/en/

"Deep convergence is achieved at the physical hardware layer, protocol layer, and application layer to deliver a unified communication experience and a richer converged experience to users," explains Zheng Xiaohua, the head of Hytera Pro. Terminal Product Line. "The broadband and narrowband platforms complement each other through their particular capabilities to provide customers with even greater value."

Multi-mode radio pioneer

Zheng points out that the sophistication of the multi-mode advanced radio poses more stringent requirements on the R&D, product delivery, and service capabilities of radio manufacturers. Therefore, not all manufacturers are able to deliver new products to meet new industry trends. Hytera has pioneered broadband-narrowband convergence solutions and multi-mode advanced devices based on market research and demand forecasts.

As early as in 2014, when PMR communication vendors were still exploring the transformation from narrowband to broadband, Hytera began to study a broadband-narrowband converged solution and how to develop converged products.

Hytera launched its innovative PMR-LTE Convergence Solution and the first multi-mode advanced radio PDC760/PTC760 series in 2017. This was followed by the release of its latest multi-mode advanced radio, the PTC680 TETRA/LTE device, in June 2019.

The PTC680 embodies the concept of broadband-narrowband convergence, public and private network collaboration, and multi-purpose design, as it provides mission-critical voice communications and rich multimedia broadband data services on one device.

The new multi-mode advanced radio is proving popular. "At present, the PTC680 is in the market promotion and expansion stage, and it has been well received," reports Zheng.

She adds that in China, pilot projects for the PTC680 have been established or are underway in 19 cities. In overseas markets, including Europe, Asia, and Africa, the target user base is very receptive to new products, and many business partners have shown interest in working with Hytera.

More functionality, more value

As mission-critical communications begin to migrate from narrowband to broadband networks, it is clear that traditional two-way radios can no longer meet the demands of high-end users seeking to take advantage of broadband data applications. As a result, Zheng believes that it is only a matter of time before multi-mode advanced radios replace traditional narrowband radios for mid- and high-end customers.

The main reason for this is the data. The data transmission rate of TETRA radios is only about 28.8 kbit/s. But multi-mode advanced radios with supporting broadband platforms can deliver up to 100Mbit/s high-speed and high-bandwidth broadband capabilities to mission-critical communications users such as police and fire services.

The broadband requirements of industry verticals vary, according to Zheng. "Some users are interested in PoC services, but these are subject to restrictions in terms of capabilities and service level guarantees. A different series of multi-mode advanced radios is required to meet the needs of end-users operating in various scenarios and to protect their original investment in PMR networks. Hytera provides a variety of multi-mode advanced radios and more reliable and comprehensive solutions to meet the specific use case scenarios of different industries," she says.

Hytera has built up years of in-depth understanding of mission and business critical communications users across many industries and use cases. For example, multi-mode advanced radios can be used across Public safety, Airport, Energy industries in conjunction with industry-specific solutions such as Police App, Airport App and Patrol App.

Multi-mode advanced radios are very sophisticated devices, so are they affordable for traditional two-way radio users? "For those users, the price of a more powerful Hytera multi-mode advanced radio is only 5-10% higher than a traditional high-end narrowband radio produced by a counterpart. When the technology platform becomes mature, the multi-mode advanced radio will deliver higher value to users at a lower cost," says Zheng.

Future innovations

Looking ahead, Zheng predicts that in the future multi-mode advanced radios will be able to take advantage of innovations in four key areas: 5G for ultra-reliable, low latency communications including fast processing of Big Data and video at the edge of the network; Artificial Intelligence using new smart chip platforms and algorithms, such as AI Engine or NPU; 'smart soldier' solutions to deliver intelligent personal networks and accessories to frontline staff; and smart personnel management through identification technologies such as voiceprint, facial and fingerprint recognition.

Hytera has established a first-mover advantage in the development of multi-mode advanced radios and narrowband-broadband converged solutions. As more manufacturers become interested in multi-mode advanced radios, market competition will definitely intensify.

Hytera believes that accurate insights into market and customer demands, high R&D investment, and continuous innovation and open ecosystems will be the only effective ways to maintain rapid growth and develop the radio industry into a smart one.

MALAYSIAN STARTUPS AIMS TO HELP PEOPLE EARN EXTRA INCOME FROM HOME

KUALA LUMPUR, May 13 (Bernama) -- None of us did see Covid-19 coming. But the founders of Kuala Lumpur based startup productlink.io clearly showed a sixth sense when launching their new venture in January this year. The vision is to help people generate extra income by reviewing consumer products and share it on social media platforms, such as YouTube, Facebook or Instagram. With an increasing number of people looking for extra sources of income these days, productlink.io has certainly risen as a way of providing monetary assistance for many.

Influencer marketing - a lucrative and glamorous job that only top celebrities with millions of followers are fortunate enough to land exclusive deals and sponsorships. “We wanted to change the general perception that earning money on social media is only for top celebrities. Nowadays everyone can become a KOL (Key Opinion Leader). Brands around the world are increasingly open to work with tier-2 & tier-3 KOLs. You don’t need millions of followers to earn money, 10k followers is enough to start. As long as you can create creative content and deliver new customers & generate sales for those brands & advertisers.” said the founding team.

Productlink.io was launched in January this year in a closed beta test mode. “We didn’t really know if it would work or not, but in the online world you just have to launch and test”, adds their Gerald Young, the company’s Chief Revenue Officer. The beta test was a great success. Over 3 months, the platform attracted over 10,000 users. Most of them made substantial earnings. The top 20 users made an average of over USD 500 per month. User Asraff Jeffery said: “Productlink gives me a better opportunity to monetize my YouTube channel and its real! Now I have full motivation to create more content and videos.

The concept is very simple. In order to participate and earn, users need to create a simple & short (video) post in which they unbox or review a consumer product. Whether it’s an electronic gadget, sports gear or beauty & makeup products, such as your favorite eyeliner or mascara - the options are endless. productlink.io is working with hundreds of global brands and marketplaces such as Lazada, Shopee or Indonesia’s ecommerce powerhouse Tokopedia. Once the (video) post is ready, users create a personalized link (productlink) which is placed inside their post. Every time someone clicks on the link and makes a purchase, the influencer will earn a commission.

All members of the management team are veterans in this industry. They have been running one of South-East Asia's most successful affiliate networks, Involve Asia, since 2014. The team explains, “Affiliate marketing requires a bit of technical understanding in order to be successful. We took the best ideas of affiliate marketing and adopted the model in a way, so that it’s much easier to understand and use. productlink is affiliate marketing 2.0 so to speak.

With a simple wifi connection and a considerable amount of time & work, any user can review their favourite products and share those on your social media platform. The platform’s secret sauce is an algorithm that always sends the potential buyer to the brand or merchant with the highest commission. This is to ensure that KOLs can maximise their earnings.

Productlink has ended their closed beta in April and is now open to users across the region. Jimmy How, the company’s CEO comments, “We see tremendous growth in Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia. But our vision is to enable people from across the world to earn a side income by talking about products they love. Whether it’s a student or a housewife.

In turbulent times like this and with the Movement Control Order issued by the Malaysian government, there’s probably nothing wrong with earning an extra side income from home.

About Productlink

AUSSIE STARTUP OFFERS GUILT-FREE TIME TO LOCKED DOWN PARENTS

SYDNEY, May 8, 2020/Medianet International-AsiaNet/--

Working parents around the world are united in the struggle to juggle keeping their young children entertained and learning whilst trying to meet the deadlines and demands of their own paid employment.

Even the most creative and diligent parents are suffering cognitive overload and burnout due to the intensity of trying to meet the continual demands of children yearning to learn.  It seems an impossible and time-taxing task, driving parents to continually seek new activities to stave off boredom.

In an ironic twist, the current lockdown saw Aussie start-up Prosper Education's own staff wondering what to do with their children while they juggled work and childcare duties.  Being app developers, staff resorted to handing over test devices to keep their kids busy while they worked, even though the apps were originally designed for ESL teachers to use in schools.
Interestingly, much to their surprise, especially being native English speakers, the apps that were originally made for classroom teachers kept their young children busy for hours, and consistently over weeks.

This inspired the team to create the Prosper Education Home App specifically to let parents gain back valuable guilt-free time without having to think about what they are going to do with their kids.

According to Prosper Education's CEO, Genevieve Gilmore, mother of four, teacher and founding member of Mathletics (ASX: 3PL) the current lockdown environment has shown parents just how hard it is to manage their children's time and education from home. "It's a happy accident that our original content designed for ESL students actually works really well with native speakers.  The research suggests that native language learning and second language learning differs however we've found that for this age group they seem to be learning similarly."

Ben Rawson in the UK said, "Max is only 3 but if it's not Peppa Pig, it's Prosper's 'The Learning Game' he wants to play - at first I was just using it so I can distract him so I can get on with work, but now I've realised he's actually been learning new words - I tell people I'm Father of the Year."

Biotalys' first biocontrol proves high efficacy in global fruit, vegetables field trial programme

KUALA LUMPUR, May 6 -- Biotalys NV, a transformative food and crop protection company, has announced the results from over 100 field trials with its first, breakthrough biofungicide, BioFun-1.

According to a statement by the Belgium-based company, BioFun-1 is on track to be launched in the United States (US) in 2022, followed by global market introductions.

Developing a new generation of protein-based biocontrol solutions, Biotalys aims to help farmers protect yields and reduce food waste by both preventing crop loss and extending post-harvest protection with sustainable and safe products.

The 2019 field trial programme took place across the US and key European countries and included more than 50 efficacy trials against major pests such as Botrytis cinerea and powdery mildew.

These diseases considerably impact yields and quality in a wide range of fruit and vegetable crops, and are responsible for significant food losses, pre- and post-harvest.

In solo applications, BioFun-1 has provided high protection against multiple pathogens in the majority (over 85 per cent) of the trials compared to the untreated control.

BioFun-1 showed a clean dose response curve, allowing dose rate modulation to adapt to the disease pressure conditions. Under severe disease pressure, a higher dose rate provides comparable protection to the chemical reference without the challenge of residues for the growers.

The next field trial programme is already in process, spanning more than 150 field trials in various crops and different environmental conditions in Europe, South Africa and the US.

The 2020 field trial programme will support the regulatory efficacy data package and focus on the intrinsic activity of the biofungicide, field efficacy validation and characterisation, and the impact of the end-season positioning in harvested fruits and vegetables.
